Partnership Spotlight - The BroProject CIC

Partnership Spotlight - The BroProject CIC

At Rugga Coffee, we believe that community and conversation can save lives. That's why we're proud to donate a proportion of of our profits to the BroProject CIC - an organisation dedicated to strengthening mens' mental health through free, fun, shared activities and meaningful connection.

Who are the BroProject CIC?

The BroProject CIC is a men's mental health organisation that uses community and group activities to foster a fun, relaxed and inviting environment for all. The aim is to provide a safe space to meet new people, break down the stigma around men's mental health and provide support.

The BroProject vision is to create a world in which mental health is openly discussed, communities uplift each other and everyone feels they have a safe space to get support.

Where did it all start?

The BroProject was founded by Matt Peterson, a former gym owner. When the pandemic hit, Matt faced a rollercoaster of uncertainty for himself and his family, following the closure of the business with a baby on the way.

From his own experiences of using community and physical activity to get through the tough times, he started creating spaces for men to gather and participate in various activities. The fun atmosphere and sense of belonging to a wider community allowed men to engage in physical activity and open up about their own struggles, thus preventing mental health issues from escalating. As well as providing a safe space for them to talk with like minded people if they felt overwhelmed.

Who can benefit from the BroProject CIC's work?

Currently, the BroProject primarily work with men - particularly those who feel isolated or struggle to talk about their mental health. However, they plan to provide opportunities for whole family support in the near future.

They offer free sessions which include a variety of activities to foster connection and promote well being. These include:

  • Bench Press Sessions
  • Martial Arts
  • Golf Range Sessions
  • Bootcamps
  • Park Run
  • Creative Workshops

They also partner with local gyms and clubs to host these sessions.

How can I get involved with the BroProject?

1. Attend a Session — they are free and open to men who want connection, fun, and do something.

2. Donate: proceeds go to funding events, training mental health supporters and funding future support programs.

3. Become a partner or sponsor. For example if you own a local company you can help provide venues, funding, or showcase our support.

4. Spread awareness: share our mission, invite others to sessions, engage on social media to let more people know what we do.

5. Volunteer or help with organising sessions, events, fundraising opportunities or outreach.

Stronger together - the BroProject CIC and Rugga Coffee

Matt says:

Rugga Coffee has a shared value with the BroProject - supporting mental health awareness throughout the community. We understand that coffee culture is a great way to bring people together and spark conversations over a cup. If I could sum up Rugga Coffee in 3 words it would be: Local, Friendly, Community.

Our partnership has enabled us to reach wider audiences, prompt more conversations and raise vital funds to support more local people. Together, we aim to spread awareness of our joint community work - so those in need know that they always have a safe space to talk. Whether it be a chat with a member of the Rugga team at one of their shacks or engaging in a BroProject CIC activity.

What, in your opinion is the most important thing you can do for someone struggling with their mental health?

Listen and be present. Create a safe, non-judgmental space for them to share, feel understood and know they aren't alone.

The key is to talk less and listen more. Allow the individual space to talk. One of the best phrases I've heard is " We have two ears and one mouth for a reason".

Sometimes the act of just showing up, asking "how are you really?" and giving the person permission to open up can make a profound difference.

And finally - what does the future hold for the BroProject CIC?

We are working hard to launch our BroProject CIC Community Hub in Newton Abbot  very soon. The hub will be a welcoming, sports based facility where everyone - from children to adults can drop in. Whether just for a chat, to access support, to take part in workshops or participate in physical activities, the space will be available to all. It's about creating a consistent physical presence in the community. A safe space where conversations about mental health can happen naturally, side by side.
